Poker: 6 Different Types of poker games

Poker has many versions and variations. There are lots of different poker games, each varying in style, length, and complexity. At “friendly” tables, the dealer often has the choice of deciding the type of game. More structured tournaments usually specify the format from the get-go. A few of the most popular versions of poker need to encounter at your weekly dealer’s-choice poker game.

1. Category of games:

First, in “stud” games, players are dealt several cards (typically 5 or 7) and must use those original cards to make their best hand. Stud games are poker in which each player dealt the first card facedown. The other four cards face up with a round of betting taking place after each of the last four rounds of dealing.

Second, in “draw” games, the players need to decide to trade in some of the cards. They need to improve their hands (generally up to 3). In games, a drawing hand is when a player has an unmade hand that is not likely to be best on the current street but has the potential to “draw” to the best hand by the turn or river if a particular card comes. The most common draw that comes to mind for most people is the flush draw or straight draw.

Third, in “community card” games, the players dealt “hole cards” face down (cards that are uniquely theirs). After that, they need to play off the community cards to make their best hand. Originating in the U.S. in the 1920s, the most popular community card game in the world today is Texas Hold ’em.

Types of Poker Games

2. Types of Poker Games

Poker is popular in the modern-day world. Many people participate in the games as part of recreation or to earn money. It is essential to learn them to select the best game for yourself. Poker has a lot of variants that have come up, especially in recent years. The various options include;

Texas Hold'em

a. Texas Hold’em

Texas Hold’em is the most popular poker game in the world. If you want to learn to play online casino games, this is a great place to start. Many players, amateur or pro, who have gotten into or been exposed to poker since the early 2000s will likely know the game of No-Limit Texas Hold’em the best. It’s been the most heavily televised and popularized of all poker variants since the turn of the millennium and has easy-to-pick-up hand rankings and rules to follow. In a casino game of Texas hold ’em, the dealer will shuffle a standard 52-card deck (but will not play in casinos and card rooms).

b. Omaha in the poker game

Omaha Hold’em (also known as just Omaha) is a game that is similar to Texas Hold’em but with a few key differences. Like Texas Hold’em, the object of Omaha is to make the best possible five-card hand, using a combination of hole cards and five community cards. In Omaha, however, players are dealt four hole cards and must make a five-card hand using exactly two hole cards and three community cards. It differs from Texas Hold’em, the players need to get two hole cards. They can use any combination of hole cards and community cards to make the best five-card hand. Omaha has 2 versions around the world. The 2 versions are Pot Limit Omaha and Omaha Hi-Lo (aka Omaha Eight or Better).

c. 7-Card Stud

The two downcards and one upcard have used in a 7-card stud game before the first betting round. After that, it has followed by three more upcards (with a betting round after each card) and one more downcard. After the last downcard, there is a final round of betting. The best five-card poker hand wins the pot. In all fixed-limit games, the smaller bet is a stake in the first two betting rounds. Besides that, the larger bet is stake after the betting rounds on the fifth, sixth, and seventh cards. If there is an open pair on the fourth card, any player can make a smaller or larger bet. Deliberately changing the order of your upcards in a stud game is improper because it unfairly misleads the other players.

Some of these cards in one’s hand will be face-down and hidden from players, while other cards will be face-up for the rest of the opponents to see. There are 2-8 players at a table in a 7-card stud. The goal in a 7-card stud is the same as any other poker variation: win as many chips as you can, one pot at a time.

2-7 Triple Draw

d. 2-7 Triple Draw

2-7 Triple Draw is a draw variant of poker and uses a lowball hand ranking system. In draw variants, players may discard cards from their hands and replace them with cards from the deck. The draw typically occurs before each betting round and occurs three times in 2-7 Triple Draw hence the name “Triple Draw”.The easiest way of describing a lowball format is with the phrase “worst hand wins”. This situation is not always the case since there are different ways of measuring lowball hands.

Besides that, 2-7 Triple Draw is a five-card lowball draw variant. Each player is dealt five cards and tries to make the lowest possible five-card hand. In this low ball form of poker, players have not one, but three draw attempts to try and make the best “low” hand. Unlike some other “low” forms of poker, it’s important to note that straights and flushes do count against making a low hand. Additionally, note that Aces are always high in this game. As such, this makes the best hand possible in this game 7-5-4-3-2. It also means that a hand like A-2-3-4-5 isn’t a straight, but rather Ace-high.

e. 5-Card Draw in the poker games

A five-card draw is one of the most common types of poker hands. Each player is with five cards, then a round of betting follows. Then each player may discard up to 3 cards (4 if your last card is an ace or wild card, in some circles). After that, they can get back (from the deck) as many cards as they discarded. Then there is another round of betting, and then hands are revealed (the showdown) and the highest hand wins the pot. So you are the dealer at a five-card draw game (against four other players who is seated in that order to your left). Everyone puts a nickel into the pot (Ante) and you deal out 5 cards to each player.

f. Razz in the poker games

It is a type of stud game where players try to achieve the lowest ranking. The lowest rank in the Razz variation of poker is usually the best rank. Razz is a game in which the structure is the same as a seven-card stud. Essentially the only difference in rules between the two variants is in how hand strength is determined. In seven-card stud, the highest 5-card hand wins, while in razz, the lowest 5-card hand wins. Therefore, it makes it fundamentally different from most other poker variants. Razz also happens to be one of the poker variants frequently included in mixed games, such as HORSE or 8-game. Because it is so similar in structure and gameplay, it usually occurs adjacent to stud in the order of games. Moreover, you will frequently find people at lower limits online trying to play stud during some of the razz rounds!
